Wall sculpture made of recycled Plexiglas in combination with ~ for the first time ~ an En Plein Air drawing. I get the plexiglass from companies to recycle.

The inspiration for this small, layered artwork is a novel, set high in the mountains. In combination with a poppy, signed En Plein Air in the vegetable garden.

The goal was a fresh work of art, to refresh your mind and wander.

The En Plein Air drawing was made at the end of June in the vegetable garden, during an outdoor art route, in which I also participated and made new work. I also had a piece of plexiglass in the studio with an exciting oval hole. That could just form a frame around a work of art?

This is how the experiment started.
The combination of these 2 principles, mountains with flower. The drawing is enclosed, integrated with the ‘frame’. Which is no longer a frame, but part of a wall sculpture.

MAKING OF

Part 1. Poppy ~ En Plein Air

At the end of June 2022 I participated in the outdoor exhibition at the Jan Vroegop Community Garden Association in Zaandam. The association exists 75 years and celebrated it with an art route through the vegetable gardens, in collaboration with artists association St. Tengel from the Zaan region.

I exhibited my En Plein Air works. A table full of outdoor drawings and small paintings on the trees. I also made new drawings in the vegetable garden, such as this Papaver on A5 with colored pencil.

Part 2. Composition, Mountains

In the same period I read a book by the writer Paolo Cognetti. It takes place in the mountains of the Aosta Valley in Italy. I like the mountains.

I had the atmosphere of the mountain slopes with me for a few weeks, because of this book. The peace, freshness, pine trees and thin air. I let a light breeze blow. (Partly because it was very hot in my studio in those weeks and a fresh breeze would be welcome).

A poppy also occurs in the mountains. The combination is a logical one.

The blue elements of sky and water came last. The question was where? On the flanks or above and below? It has become the last. It provides movement.

Adding elements
Sustainable

In this way a wall sculpture has been created in an experimental way (as it always is). I combine shapes and colors waste pieces perspex. Boxes are full in my studio.

I reuse leftover pieces from model company Studio Z-as and architectural firm UNStudio to paint endlessly and assemble into a dynamic whole.

Nice to know
Studio Z-as had just completed a new model during this period, with reflective pink plexiglass incorporated. I immediately used the leftovers.

I love pink. It is an associative color and combines fresh with yellow and blue-green. The best color choice for the theme, Composition Mountains with Poppy. As if the evening sun is already descending.

The drawing has been given a plexiglass front plate and back wall. Well protected interwoven, as if framed.

Back

My assembly arts are semi-transparent. That is why the back is often just as colorful as the front.

The mounting of the suspension system is often a puzzle in itself and different for every job.

I still had the number 6, a remnant of a Perspex house number plate. Reversed it becomes a 9, also the perfect hook to hang the work on. Name, title and date are also on the back.

The relief is ready to hang, with spacers for a few cm. from the wall, so that light and shadow can play with it. This work doesn’t need a list, that’s obvious.
